The nickname Tiger came from his parents. His father Earl was a veteran of the US-Vietnam war. colonel Voung Dand Phong, a South Vietnamese colonel, is his father’s friend with the name Tiger.
The parents named him Tiger in honour of the colonel. This would go on to become his most popular name, well known worldwide. Woods was raised in Orange County, California. Woods was introduced to golf before the age of two by his father Earl who was an amateur golfer. As a war veteran, Earl would play golf with Woods at the Navy Golf University. This made Woods develop a love and interest in golf before he could even speak.
Woods attended Western High School where he excelled at golf. At age 15 he was the youngest US Junior Amateur golf champion and also won different Player of the year award. In 1994, he graduated high school and moved on to Stanford University under a golf scholarship. He studied economics and won several championships and titles while in college.

Woods won three consecutive US Junior Amateur tournaments as an amateur. He also made it to several American teams, such as the 1995 Walker Cup, the 1994 Eisenhower Trophy and many others.
