Born Curtis James Jackson III on July 6, 1975, he is popularly known as 50 Cent. 50 Cent was raised by his mother Sabrina, who passed away when 50 Cent was 8. At age 11, 50 Cent began boxing and spending time at the local gym. 50 Cent was dealing drugs while at Andrew Jackson High School. He was arrested and incarcerated and earned a GED while serving time. He got the inspiration from 1980s Brooklyn robber Kelvin Martin to use the stage name 50 Cent.
